Celebrate the Mokelumne on a special raft trip on Sunday, June 23

UPDATE: The June 23rd O.A.R.S. raft trips on the Mokelumne River. Due to the high level of requests for reservations, we have added an 8 am trip. Trips are now scheduled at 8 am, 12 noon and 4 pm.

On Sunday, June 23, river-lovers can experience the Mokelumne River by taking a special raft trip with O.A.R.S. of Angels Camp. Two trips that day on the Mokelumne’s six-mile Electra-Middle Bar run will benefit the Foothill Conservancy’s continuing work to protect and restore the river. The Mokelumne is not yet open to commercial rafting, so this is a rare opportunity for you to experience this Wild and Scenic-eligible river.

This is a wonderful opportunity to float the Mokelumne and experience its beauty from river level. The trip is a fun journey through Class II-III whitewater suitable for families and seniors. No prior rafting experience is required. Participants will enjoy the scenery as well as fun, splashy rapids: the Chute, S-Turn, and Devil’s Toilet Bowl. West of the Highway 49 bridge, rafters may see ducks, geese, swallows and other wildllife along the river. The entire trip, including transportation to and from the site, usually takes less than four hours.
Cost is $70 per person and space is limited. Advance reservations are required. The trip is suitable for rafters from age 6 up. Rafters under 18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult. If the river flows are too high, O.A.R.S. may need to restrict the trips to older youth and adults.

The raft trips will be guided and equipped by O.A.R.S. of Angels Camp, one of the finest whitewater rafting companies in the world. They have fun, knowledgeable guides and well-equipped and maintained rafts.
Foothill Conservancy of Pine Grove is the leading conservation group involved in the protection and restoration of the upper Mokelumne River. In 2012, it prevailed in a fight to stop a new, higher Pardee Dam and the resulting expansion of Pardee Reservoir. The Conservancy is now seeking permanent protection of the Mokelumne through Wild and Scenic River designation.

To reserve your spot, call Randy at Foothill Conservancy, 209-295-4900 or e-mail him at randy@foothillconservancy.org

For more on O.A.R.S., see its website, www.oars.com. For more on Foothill Conservancy’s efforts to protect and restore the Mokelumne, and photos of the river, see its website, www.foothillconservancy.org.
For more information on the trips, contact Randy Berg weekday mornings at 209-295-4900 or e-mail randy@foothillconservancy.org

Paddling Film Festival Brings Outdoor Films to Jackson on Saturday, June 8

Reel Paddling Film Festival World Tour offers something for all who love water sports and nature.

On Saturday, June 8, the Foothill Conservancy will host the regional premiere of the international Reel Paddling Film Festival World Tour in Jackson. The event will be held in the Main Events Room at the Amador Senior Center, 229 New York Ranch Road, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are on sale now.
“These award-winning films offer something for everyone,” said Foothill Conservancy Executive Director Cecily Smith. “Whether you enjoy kayaking whitewater rivers, paddling mountain lakes, fishing, or getting out in nature for inspiration and relaxation, you’ll find a film to enjoy.”
The Reel Paddling Film Festival is an annual contest that awards winning films in 10 categories. It inspires people to explore rivers, lakes and oceans, push physical and emotional extremes, embrace the paddling lifestyle and appreciate the heritage of special wild places. The winners and other films are then toured to more than 100 cities around the world, screening for an audience of more than 30,000 outdoor adventure enthusiasts and their friends and families. Teva is the primary sponsor of the 8th Annual Reel Paddling Film Festival World Tour.
The June 8 festival in Jackson will feature several of the best films. The local showing is the first in the region.
“We hope to attract paddlers from throughout the area to Jackson, “Smith said, “especially since there are scheduled whitewater boating releases on the Mokelumne that weekend on the Class IV Tiger Creek Dam Run above Highway 26. We hope that visiting paddlers will enjoy the river during the day, have dinner at a local restaurant, then come over to the Senior Center to join local residents for a fun film evening.”
The evening will include a raffle and silent auction. Items include a one-day OARS raft trip for four on the South Fork of the American River, a half-day IRIE trip for two on the Truckee River, kayak roll classes from Current Adventures and gift certificates from Camp Lotus and Sierra Nevada Adventure Company. Additional sponsors include Sierra Nevada Brewery, Mountain Mike’s Pizza and author Steve Evans.
Tickets to the film festival are $12 in advance and $15 at the door. They’re available online at www.ticketriver.com/event/7002-reel-paddling-film-festival. The ticket purchase entitles the purchaser to a free one-year digital edition subscription to one of these four magazines: Rapid, Adventure Kayak, Canoeroots or Kayak Angler. Special offer details will be available at the event.
The event is a benefit for the Foothill Conservancy’s Mokelumne River conservation efforts.
