Free Beginning Beekeeping Class - Sat Mar 2

Join Amador County Master Gardeners on Saturday, March 2nd from 9am to noon for a free Beginning Beekeeping class. The class, being held at the Amador County GSA Building, 12200-B Airport Road in Martell, will cover such beekeeping basics as how bees make honey and how they decide on a new home. Also included will be a review of different types of hives and beekeeping equipment as well as products of the hive.

Olive and Grape Pruning - Sat Feb 23

On February 23 Amador County Master Gardeners present free hands-on olive and grape pruning classes for homeowners. The classes are open to the public and will be taught and practiced at Valley Oaks Vineyard. Pruning olive trees will begin at 12 noon, and grape pruning will begin at 1pm. Both classes end at 3pm. Instruction includes head pruning and spur pruning of grapes. Bring hand by-pass pruners, small loppers, or another favorite tool; be sure your tools are disinfected prior to the class.

Valley Oaks Vineyard is located at 10730 Valley Drive in Plymouth. Take Highway 49 to Plymouth. Going north on 49, turn right on Shenandoah Valley Road (east 16). Turn left if traveling south on 49. Be careful not to head up hill to Fiddletown. Stay on east 16 until Bell Road. Turn left on Bell, then left on Valley Drive, and drive about one-half mile.

Growing Great Vegetables, Part 1 - Sat Feb 23

Amador County Master Gardeners present Part 1, Growing Great Vegetables, on February 23 from 9am to noon at the Amador County GSA Building, 12200-B Airport Road in Martell. This free class is the first in a four-part series designed to involve you in year-round vegetable gardening here in the foothills. Part 1 introduces you to the vegetable planting guide to help you with seed starting and transplanting dates for your elevation. Sun exposure, frost, and careful record keeping help assure success. Organic gardening will be introduced as well as watering zones, the value of raised beds, and techniques for extending the gardening season.

   This class is free and open to the public. Master Gardeners with vegetable gardening experience will be on hand for special guidance.
