Amador County Fair Announces 2014 Theme: "There's No Place Like Home"

PLYMOUTH, CA. One of the sentiments heard over and over by visitors to the Amador County Fair is that it embodies a good, old-fashioned, home town feeling. And it does. Even former residents of Amador County plan vacations and weekends back home to attend this annual gathering. The Fair has often been described as a giant family reunion where old friends and families come together to celebrate the community.

So it was no surprise when talks turned to the theme for the 2014 Fair theme, that "No Place Like Home" was the overwhelming fan winner when staff asked their Facebook friends, and it was the hands down favorite with the Amador County Fair Board.

Using the oft-quoted mantra from Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz also encourages a slew of decorating and theme ideas incorporating famous Oz characters and situations. For example a yellow brick road of gold zinnias down the midway might greet visitors, look alike contests, scarecrows galore, and decorated ruby slippers come immediately to mind.

The 2014 Amador County Fair will be held July 24-27. The Fair staff welcomes ideas and suggestions for using the theme in contests, exhibits, and decorating, as well as volunteers and sponsors to help create the fun.

For information visit AmadorCountyFair.com or email HaveFun@AmadorCountyFair.com.

Sutter Creek’s 7th Annual Parade of Lights - Sat Dec 14

Sutter Creek comes alive in twinkling lights on Saturday, December 14th, as everything from cars, mail trucks, school buses, horses, dogs, people, marching bands, baton twirlers, and more, are decorated in twinkling lights and parade down Historic Sutter Creeks' Main Street beneath the moonlight on a crisp December evening. Everyone is invited to come down and watch this magical parade. Children and adults enjoy this evening of old fashioned hometown fun.
Main Street itself is beautiful to behold. All of the wonderful, historic Gold Rush buildings are decked out in Holiday splendor, with twinkling lights and wreathes. Bubbles float down from the Hotel Sutter's balcony and gives everyone the feeling of snowflakes. Vintage lighted Garland sways high above over Main Street and the classic Store front windows are decorated and displaying unique gift ideas.
The parade starts at 6:30 on the North end of Sutter Creek and will last about an hour and a half. Be sure and be in town before 5:30 when the street will be closed off. There is plenty of parking downtown, just don't park on Main Street, so everyone will have a good view of this wonderful parade! Remember to dress warm and have fun. Come early and enjoy the old town Holiday charm of Sutter Creek!
For more information or for applications to be in the parade, visit www.suttercreek.org

JACKSON, CA - Gather up the family, invite your friends and neighbors, and join the community as the spirit of the holidays brightens downtown Jackson, California’s annual Christmas Delights Open House! The festivities will be held on the evenings of Thanksgiving Day weekend, Friday and Saturday, November 29 and 30, 6-9 p.m.

Free horse-drawn carriage rides will be running both evenings, fire dancers will light up Main Street, Mrs. Claus will be at Hein & Co. bookstore reading holiday stories to children, and Father Christmas, Merry Holly, and the Outlaws and Old Dawgs will add old fashioned fun to Main Street and Leslie Vasquez will practice her face-painting magic at Davenport Properties. Friday evening, families can take photos with beautiful Great Pyrenees dogs at the Firehouse, graciously provided by the Great Pyrenees Club of California
On Friday or Saturday from 10 am – 9 pm, kids grades 1 – 8 can create gifts for family and friends at ACRA’s Santa’s Workshop at The Hub (above Hein & Co. at 204 Main St.). There’s a $10.00 cost per child, with a rebate offer for shopping in Jackson. See ACRA’s website, www.goacra.org, for details.
The whole family will enjoy the cheerful holiday atmosphere as Jackson’s downtown merchants pull out all the stops to make this year’s Christmas Delights something special.  In addition to keeping their doors open after hours on both nights and offering refreshments, shopkeepers will offer holiday specials to visitors browsing through festively-decorated gift shops and specialty stores!

Harvest Faire in Ione - Sat Oct 12

When Linus looks for the Great Pumpkin this year, he might want to check out Ione Business and Community Association’s Harvest Faire. On Saturday, October 12th, starting at 8:30 am, Main Street in Ione will host a Pumpkin Contest, Scarecrow Contest, Chalk the Walk, Dog Costume Contest, and Vendor Booths. Events occur all day long and festivities conclude at 4 pm.

The Pumpkin Contest brings increasingly larger pumpkins every year. The word is that growers from Auburn, are planning to bring some of their sizeable pumpkins to compete this year. The cash prize for the heaviest pumpkin is $1,000 for the winning adult, 18 and up, and $500 is the prize for the kids’ age group. Weirdest and Best Decorated/Carved are the other categories available for bragging rights. Check-in for largest pumpkin is 9:00 am and awards occur at noon. For Weirdest and Best Decorated or Carved, check-in is at noon and awards happen at 3:30 pm; pumpkins may be picked up at 4 pm. If you choose not to take your pumpkin home, your pumpkin will be donated to Preston Castle’s Halloween Haunt.

Chalk the Walk takes place on both sides of Main Street, on the sidewalks of downtown Ione. Chalk is provided and the event is free to all who wish to display their artistic talent, as long as your knees can take it. Prizes are awarded to Kids and Adults.

The Scarecrow Contest has a $500 cash prize. Build your own scarecrow, starting at 9 am that day, and compete for cash prizes, which will be awarded at 2:30 pm. Scarecrows will be on display in downtown Ione through Halloween. Categories are ages: 10 and under, 11 to 16, and 17 and up.

The Dog Costume Contest is the chance for your best friend to shine. Categories are: Scariest, Prettiest, Most Festive, and Looks Like Owner. Mike and Cherie Flores of Gold Country Pet Resort are conducting this event. Check-in is at 10 and awards are at 1 pm. Gold Country Pet Resort also plans a Canine Demonstration at 2 pm.

Vendor booths will fill the parking lot by City Hall. You will be able to buy pumpkins, arts and crafts. If you are interested in taking a space, contact Skip Schaufel, at 256-3158.

Cowboy Poet Baxter Black will help save Amador County Fair

The Amador County Fair Foundation was formed in 2008, three years before Governor Jerry Brown drew a line through the State's budget eliminating all funding for the network of California's Fairs. Since that time, with the motto of "Help Save Our Fair" it has raised more than $175,000 on behalf of the Amador County Fair.

In October the Association is holding a fund-raiser featuring the most famous cowboy poet and humorist of our time, Baxter Black.  Featured on National Public Radio, frequent guest on late night television, and friend to cowboys, ranchers and farmers, he has rhymed his way into the national spotlight and is the best selling cowboy poet in the world.

Baxter is a cowboy raised in New Mexico and claims he can shoe a horse and string a barb wire fence. He is an former large animal veterinarian, and admits he is a sorry team roper. This excerpt is taken from his promotional materials – "Everything about Baxter is cowboy; his cartoonish mustache, his personality and his poetry. He makes a living shining a spotlight on the flaws and foibles of everyday cowboy life, the day-to-day ups and downs of people who live with livestock and work the land. He demonstrates that it is the truth in his humor that makes it funny. Driven by a left hand sense of humor Black evokes laughter just by being there."

The fundraiser will be held at the Amador County Fairgrounds in Pokerville Hall October 18, 2013. Doors open at 5:30 pm. Tickets are $45 with a no-host bar. Also appearing are The Old West Trio performing classic cowboy tunes. Advance purchase of tickets is advised by calling (209) 245-6921 or visit the website at: www.amadorfairfoundation.org/events.html. Credit cards are accepted over the phone.
